Civilization Returns - Sort Of.
Well, it is Thursday evening here at my new home, yes another gated community. This one is supported by the fine citizens of
New York State.
I have been here a little over a month now, and was just able to purchase a radio this past Tuesday. It only cost $9.75 and well, it is sort of short on features.
First off, it is AM/FM. OK you say, that is a good start. Well, even though the headphones, which suddenly became ear buds, have a stereo mini-plug, the radio does not deliver a stereo signal to the plug. So I get mono FM.
I did find a classical music station, WNED. Unfortunately they do not seem to tap into any
NPR or
PRI programs, but last night at 8:00 P.M. I was treated to a Los Angeles Philharmonic concert. It was an all-Russian program and included
Pictures at an Exhibition.
Tonight as I write this I am listening to the
New York Philharmonic play
Beethoven's Fifth and next up is the
Ninth. So I am in for a wonderful evening of music.
The lack of a stereo signal and no true bass response does decrease the full sonic treat, but it is certainly a lot better than nothing, and after three months of no music at all, this is good!
The other cool part is all you wonderful blog readers can share in the music. Apparently the station broadcasts on the Web at
wned.org.
If you can listen to Web broadcasts on you computer and if you listen between 8:00 P.M. and 1:00 A.M. or so on any given night, you and I will be hearing the very same music at the same time.
Drop me a comment if you manage to hear any of the music.
